Hexham was pleased to put out two teams of mostly novice racers for this month’s Sunday League, coxed with grit and determination by Sue and Pam.
Sadly, neither team’s performance had much impact on the rankings though all rowers learned a lot about things like rowing in unfamiliar, lively waters with unfamiliar equipment – ‘‘those blade handles were like trying to roll Coke cans in your fingers!’
On the plus side, both teams showed consistency… Hexagogo lost all their races while Hexcited finally won a race. The problem was that their win was against Hexagogo! The race was neck and neck until Hexagogo’s timing finally succumbed to the fat handles and the choppy water.
In the end, both teams (and their supportive supporters) had a lovely day out at the seaside. Hexagogo’s rollercoaster ride was thrilling (courtesy of the two fast boats coming into harbour as the crew was getting into start position). Meanwhile Hexcited went on a (sadly unsuccessful) wildlife spotting cruise almost out in the North Sea between races, while waiting for the sail boats to be launched and for the referee to get a coffee.
Many thanks go to Tynemouth for a lovely, welcoming day with great beachside helpers and a delicious spread, though Carl’s charcuterie platter was stiff competition. And no one fell in!
