On Saturday 11th May, junior and masters crews headed to Tees Rowing Club for their annual regatta, multi-lane racing under the iconic Infinity Bridge. The sun shone, the sausage sandwiches were highly recommended and the River Tees was calm except when following an over enthusiastic launch driver!
Open Masters 2x.G.
John and Rob of HRC had an interesting 4 aside race with, unusually no crews having handicaps. Tees(A), a national medallist champs crew, won but otherwise a close race between Bradford ARC, Tees (B) and Hexham. Hexham double stayed in lane, made the distance and had a fast finish so good recovery work in progress.
Womens masters E to H singles.
Sue (age cat E) of HRC competed in her single against the winner Celia (age cat H) of Lakeland (double gold indoor champion) who hit three buoys at the finish but still managed to hold off Gill (age cat F )of Tarn by 3/4 of a length. Due to the differences in ages, Sue set off 17 seconds behind Celia who had the maximum handicap of the race.
Masters singles.
David Gold (age cat F) of HRC had a similar strong field in singles. Paul (age cat H) of Cambois won easily over Duncan of TURC and Winton of John O Gaunt. Good effort from David but with experienced scullers having 17 seconds handicap start it was a big ask!
Masters 4x-
A Hexham/Cambois composite. All fired up from a win at Durham City Regatta the previous weekend, regrettably Tees proved a lane too far. Perhaps not their best day with lane racing proving a challenge for this newly formed crew. The winners were Bradford RC (age cat G) including 2 rowers from the above doubles race and who won over Talkin Tarn G by a length.
Congratulations to the Juniors who had some great racing too, winning in four events, W J15 4x+ (b1), Op J18 1x (b2), Op J16 4x- and W J15 2x (b2).
Great learning experience for all at the only North Eastern regional venue to offer 4 side by side lane racing. Thank you to our trailer drivers, David, Paul and Ben.
