They’ve done it again! Hexham Rowing Club’s WJ14 coxed quad crew notched up another significant victory on the run in to this year’s regatta season.
The girls, who have already won the right to represent the region in the JIRR national championships, beat all comers to win their category at the Ponteland Junior Head, held at Newburn at the weekend.
Racing in excellent weather and water conditions the girls, Hayley Hannant, Ciara Duncan, Lucy Thorpe and Toni-Louise Brown, coxed by Owen Slipman, set off at a cracking pace on the 2,400 metre course and were soon overtaking other crews, always a good sign in a time-trial event.
Full of confidence and rowing beautifully, they managed to maintain that early pace throughout and finished a full 23 seconds ahead of their nearest rivals, and top of a group of 11 crews.
It was a well-deserved win for the girls and Owen, who have worked hard to improve their skills over the winter, despite having very little water time due to the atrocious weather.
Owen swapped boats to cox the boys J14 4x+ crew of Gabe Wells-Johnson, Archie Stewart, James Turnbull and Matt Smith. They came third in their group of six, just 12 seconds behind the winners.
The regatta season, with side-by-side racing, starts at Chester-le-Street on 14 April and runs through to the summer, with Hexham Regatta on Saturday 2nd June.
