Successful weekend for Hexham Junior and Masters Squads
It was the first time Hexham had entered juniors in Durham, and it proved worthwhile as the WJ13 coxed quad of Toni-Louise Brown, Ciara Duncan, Lucy Thorpe, Hayley Hannant and cox Owen Slipman followed up their great victory at Hexham.Hayley and Owen joined Tyne United to make up a composite WJ14 coxed quad, and they just missed out in the final. But Hayley enjoyed better success as part of Tyne’s WJ14 coxed eight. Elsewhere, Chloe Slipman, Tabitha Barrass-Barker and Jack Curtis joined mates from Durham to make other crews.
Meanwhile a few hundred miles away, the Masters Squad were racing hard against strong headwinds. Despite Kevin being poorly, he and Catherine managed to get through their heat to get a Bronze medal in their Mxd C 2x and a Gold medal in the composite Mxd C 4x- with Ian and Hilary from Berwick RC. Further wins came from Steve and Gris in the Non Championship category (replacing Novice and IM3) in their D-F 2x and an absolutely storming effort from Sue in her Non Championship single race which saw her battling horrible conditions and to secure a gold medal! Another, rather unexpected, non championship gold medal was garnered for coxing a Durham/Tyne/Tideway 8+!
There was disappointment for other Hexham members who raced well but were unable to secure medal places and another two crews who were geared up to race when the event was cancelled due to the worsening conditions. Here's to next year!
