A good showing by Hexham RC crews at the Great Tyne Row. The event is a 25km row from Newburn to Tynemouth RC. Three Hexham crews were entered and two won their categories!
The fastest Hexham crew (Hexapod) came third overall and were the fastest mixed crew in a time of 1 hour 59 minutes. The crew comprised of; Beverley Beattie as cox, Barney Hawkins at stroke, Catherine Bockett, Nat Geere and Craig Dawson. Their cox, Beverley, kept telling them that they WERE enjoying themselves as waves broke over their heads, fortunately they didn't throw her overboard as that would have negated their win!!! The boat took on so much water that Beverley was reduced to bailing out with her trainer in order to lighten the load!
The second fastest Hexham crew and fourth overall fastest boat, won the Open coxed category. This was a composite crew with Tyne RC and was named the Tyne Treaders this crew comprised of Andrew Watson as cox, Philip Smith at stroke, Neil Watson and Stuart Heslop (plus a Tyne RC member). They completed the course in 2 hours (which just goes to show that you are faster with women in your boat :-) !!!) but a great effort from the Hexham rowers who have only recently completed their Learn 2 Row course and are clearly bound for success in the future.
'Hexit', the third Hexham crew did the course in a valiant time of 2 hours 17minutes. A great effort from all crews and an interesting experience too!
