DUO’S CRASH COURSE TO VICTORY

HEXHAM Rowing Club earned a rare victory at Durham Regatta, with Andrew Beattie and Kevin Oates, pictured left, winning the double sculls event on Sunday.

It had been a long day of racing for the duo, with the first race at 9am and the final not until 6pm.

Their first race, against Tyne Rowing Club, saw Hexham claiming a convincing victory without being fully tested.

The final was a repeat of the final at Hexham Regatta the previous week, with a technically adept young Talkin Tarn double seeking revenge on Hexham.

Both crews started well, with the Tarn duo edging in front, but by half-way Hexham had settled into a good rhythm and both crews were neck and neck.

As they entered the home straight, Hexham had opened up a lead despite two serious errors of blade work.

The story, however, was far from over as close to the finish a rogue crew returning upstream strayed onto the course and collided with the Hexham double.

Andrew lost one of his blades and the race was over for Hexham.

Seeing this calamity, the Tarn crew put on a burst and pulled through to cross the finishing line first.

The umpires conferred and a re-row was ordered.

Unfortunately it meant rowing straight back to the start without any time to recover.

The re-row saw neither crew gaining advantage from the start, but as the race progressed, Hexham managed an error free course and pulled ahead, crossing the finishing line with a comfortable lead to win the event, a qualifying race, which raises their status for future regattas.

Meanwhile, the only other member of the club representing Hexham at the regatta, George Doody, the club captain, had competed in veteran sculls on the Saturday, but failed to beat his very experienced competitor from Durham ARC.

However, it was a different story for Sam Doody, son of George and a student at Durham University.

Sam stroked the Collingwood College eight to two impressive milestones over the weekend.
