The annual Hexham rowing regatta at Tyne Green, one of the most popular and well attended events in the town’s sporting calendar, returns once more on Saturday, June 4.
Earlier in the year there were some concerns that this event would not go ahead as planned, following the problems arising from the January floods.
Although the temporary water main passes close to the boat house, remedial work carried out by Northumbrian Water has ensured that there will be no disruption to planned activities on the day.
Admission is free .
This year’s major event sponsor is AMEC’s wind energy business based in Hexham and a representative of the company will present the prizes
Hexham Regatta is well-attended by clubs from Berwick down to Stockton, and clubs from outside the NorthEast are also expected to compete, along with several university and college crews.
Clubs entering crews into veteran events (strictly the over 30s) can compete for the Neil Lewis Memorial Trophy, which was instigated last year in memory of the former popular club member who contributed numerous entertaining rowing articles to this very column.
Talkin Tarn Rowing Club won the trophy last year and will no doubt be hoping to retain it.
This year Hexham Rowing Club will introduce another new trophy, this time for college crews, which has been purchased using a kind donation from close relatives of Neil.
There will of course be the usual range of additional attractions associated with the event, including a marquee housing refreshments, a licensed bar, and for the more energetic visitor, an ergo rowing machine challenge.
Lunchtime entertainment will be provided by The Segretta Stompers New Orleans Jazz Band, while younger spectators will once more find the bouncy castle a popular distraction.
Once more racing is expected to begin shortly after 9am.
