Regatta promises full day of fun

For a pleasant day out it is always worth a visit to the picturesque riverside in Hexham. Here the Tyne flows through a particularly scenic spot allowing glimpses of wildlife along the banks. And this Saturday, June 5, visitors will also be able to watch rowers from across the region competing in the 118th Hexham Regatta.

Members of Hexham Rowing Club have their fingers crossed for good weather, which has contributed to the regatta's success in the past few years. A record number of entries took part last year, with competitors and spectators enjoying both the competition and other attractions. Racing will commence at 10am and takes place over a 750-metre course, finishing just before the weir at the town's Tyne Bridge. All ages and abilities are represented. Many clubs will be hoping to win the Victor Ludorum Trophy. Introduced in 2002, this is awarded to the club achieving the highest number of points on the day.

Hexham's own Queen Elizabeth High School Rowing Club was the winner last year and will be aiming to retain the title.

This year sees the introduction of the Neil Lewis Trophy, which will be awarded to the club with the highest number of veteran points (those aged 31 and over).

The trophy was commissioned by Hexham Rowing Club to commemorate the huge contribution made by Neil to the club prior to his death earlier this year.

Other attractions during the day include a marquee where you can take time out to enjoy a beer and other refreshments.

For the more energetic, there is the opportunity to take up the ergo challenge, which involves a time trial on a rowing machine.

Additional attractions, located near to the children's play area on Tyne Green, include a bouncy castle and sumo wrestling. The sumo-wrestling contest involves participants donning a sumo suit and promises to be just as entertaining for the spectators as the contenders. During the lunchtime period visitors will be able to relax while listening to the music of the Canny Crack folk group and there will also be the chance to preview the Art Tour.
