Hexham Rowing Club hosts its annual regatta on Tyne Green tomorrow, this year sponsored by Transco.
The increasing popularity of this event continues with entries once again up on last year’s record attendance.
The regatta will pay tribute to Neil Lewis who died earlier this year by awarding a new trophy for those competing in veteran events.
Neil learned to row at HRC and contributed much to the success of the club, including his amusing reports on rowing as published in the Courant.
He retained his interest in and enthusiasm for the affairs of the club after he moved to Canada in 2002, where he continued to row and to coach at Montreal Rowing Club.
The Neil Lewis Memorial Trophy has been created for the club by Graham Taylor of the Crown Studios in Elsdon.
Although the trophy will remain in the possession of the club, all winners of events tomorrow will receive one of the unique medals, which were produced by Neil in the past.
This year the medals are dedicated to his memory and were delivered personally to the club last Saturday by Neil’s mother Beryl and sister Fiona.
Members of HRC were on hand to welcome them, including Bob Manning, who was responsible for introducing Neil to rowing, and club captain George Doody who in turn received instruction from Neil.
Neil also achieved success as a writer and one of his last pieces on rowing is included in the Regatta programme. Entitled ‘The Single Scull’ it was published in the Montreal Magazine.
The regatta starts at 10 am and there is no admission charge.
As well as the racing, other attractions include the Canny Crack folk group, a preview of the Art Tour, bouncy castle and sumo wrestling.
Refreshments and a bar will be available in the marquee.
The event promises to be a good day out for the whole family.
