Hundreds of people are expected to pour into Hexham on Saturday for its annual regatta.

The event, from 10am to 5pm, is organised by Hexham Rowing Club and is expected to be bigger and better than ever this year.

"It's our 125th birthday this year, so we've really pulled out all the stops," said Lindsay King, of the organising committee.

"We had 167 races last year, but this year, we've got a record number of 232 entries.

"A lot of college teams are taking part, who can't usually because of clashes with exams, and that is all going to add to the atmosphere."

Racing, which is being sponsored by Clark Scott Harden, takes place over an 800 metre course along Hexham's Tyne Green, finishing near the town's Tyne Bridge.

There will also be entertainment on dry land, including a static rowing machine contest, tug of war, a beer tent and music.
