Hundreds of people are expected to flock to the riverside at Hexham today, as the town's annual regatta gets underway.

The event, which kicks off at 10am, has been organised by Hexham Rowing Club and organising committee member Lindsay King said: "It's our 125th birthday this year, so we've really pulled out all the stops."

"We had 167 races last year, but this year, we've got a record number of 232 entries. A lot of college teams are taking part, who can't usually because of clashes with exams, and that is all going to add to the atmosphere."

Racing, which is being sponsored by CSH property consultants, takes place over an 800-metre course along Hexham's Tyne Green, finishing near the town's Tyne Bridge.

"It will feature all ages and abilities, from people just starting out, to the big boats manned by the college teams people think of when they come to this sort of event," said Lindsay.

"It is quite a unique course. Usually with regattas, you can only see a small section of the course, but at Hexham, you can see at least half of it, which all adds to the excitement."

There will also be entertainment on shore including a static rowing machine contest, tug o' war, a beer tent and music.

Said Lindsay: "It's free just to come along and watch and we are just hoping for good weather to encourage as many people as possible to come along and support us."
